10 Best Beaches In Donegal

As I set off to see Donegal’s coastal wonders, I was confronted with a tapestry of landscapes, each beach having its own distinct charm and fascinating attraction.

Every step on our voyage revealed a new chapter in the tale of Ireland’s coastline magnificence, from hidden beaches encircled by majestic cliffs to huge expanses of golden sand caressed by the Atlantic’s blue seas.

I was charmed not only by the sheer beauty of these beaches, but also by the rich history, mythology, and genuine friendliness of the inhabitants, which added a layer of romance to each sandy excursion.

 

 

1. Kinnagoe Bay

 

This is without a doubt one of my favorite beaches in Donegal, and it ranks among the top beaches in Ireland. This short stretch of beach provides a mini bit of beauty tucked away among rugged, rocky rocks.

Kinnagoe Bay makes up for its lack of size with natural beauty! On a bright day, the golden beaches and dazzling blue water are breathtaking, but the bay never fails to dazzle, even on the cloudiest of days.

From above, you can get some of the nicest views of Kinnagoe Bay, and there’s a pull-in space at the top of the track that goes down to the parking area.

The shipwrecked La Trinidad Valencera has become one of Kinnagoe Bay’s greatest attractions. The Spanish Armada consisted of 130 ships, including La Trinidad Valencera.

2. Fintra Bay

Fintra Bay’s broad, rural beach is nestled among breathtaking scenery on County Donegal’s southwest coast, just a brief drive from the maritime port of Killybegs. It is reached by a high road that affords spectacular views of both the beach and Donegal Bay.

In the summer, this is a great spot for a family day out, with plenty of opportunities to engage in beach activities, make sandcastles, and swim in the waves. A lagoon area having shallow seas and beautiful views is located at the far end of the beach from the vehicle lot.

3. Tramore Beach

Tramore Beach ranks as one of the most visited beaches on Ireland’s east coast, stretching for 5.1 kilometers along the bay in front of the town. The sandy beach is flanked by dunes and dramatic cliffs, and the rolling waves are popular with swimmers and surfers.

While the beach might get crowded in the summer, it’s preferable to go early in the morning before the tourists arrive.

Because there are no roads connecting to Tramore Beach, you’ll have to walk for 30 minutes from the car park right outside of town. This is a pleasant short stroll, although it may not be suited for individuals with restricted mobility.

Tip: With a beach this hidden, it’s simple to see why there’s no likelihood of any lifeguards being there. Not only that, but Tramore Beach has severe currents and rip tides, therefore swimming is not advised.

4. Murder Hole Beach

Murder Hole Beach, also known as Boyeeghter Bay, is one of the most unique spots to visit in Donegal, however, getting there has proved difficult due to parking concerns.

To reach Murder Hole beach, travel to Melmore Turn on the Rosguill Peninsula in northern Donegal. Because this is a lonely and lovely section of Ireland, the drive is both meandering and spectacular; try not to be caught up by the scenery.

The trek itself is pretty simple, taking less than a kilometer from the road to the water. Lough Melmore, a tiny lake, lies on your left as you travel across the field from the main road.

5. Rossnowlagh Beach

Rossnowlagh Beach in Donegal is widely recognized as one of Ireland’s top surfing beaches, stretching from the cliffs at Coolmore up to the rock outcrop at Carrickfad.

Take a stroll down to Rossnowlagh Beach to soak up the beautiful, golden sand and spectacular views out to sea. The surf here is ideal for novices, and the local surf school provides instruction as well as equipment rental.

The Foundation for Environmental Education has designated Rossnowlagh as a blue-flagged beach. This ‘gold standard’ for beaches assures that no industrial, or sewage-related releases occur and that the beach remains clean

The funnel-shaped, slowly rising beach looks west into the Atlantic Ocean and Donegal Bay, which will delight seasoned surfers.

Larger waves are caused by these two variables, especially in the winter. Rossnowlagh has previously reported waves up to 6 meters high.

6. Portnoo/Narin Beach

The nearly 2 km-long coastline is ideal for a lengthy walk at any time of year. From June to August, lifeguards are on duty, making it a popular swimming site.

The beach is moderately shielded from the weather due to its location in a bay and the welcome security offered by Dunmore Head.

For an all-day stay, nearby restrooms and adequate parking are ideal. A variety of local stores, pubs, and restaurants are available within walking distance.

Donegal has the most blue-flag beaches in Ireland, and Narin Beach is one of them! To be awarded a Blue Flag, a beach must meet the highest standards in water, amenities, safety, environmental awareness, and management.

7. Carrickfinn Beach

Carrickfinn Beach is a neat and clean beach located on County Donegal’s western shore, beside the little Donegal Airport. It is a frequent Blue Flag award recipient.

The beach features pure blue water that is safe for swimming. Lifeguards are on duty throughout the swimming season, and there is parking available.

A terrific place to come for adults and children for safe swimming, tranquil strolling, picnicking, or simply sitting and relaxing while seeing the stunning coastal environment.

8. Ballymastocker Bay

Ballymastocker Bay is a lovely bay on the western bank of Lough Swilly with a lengthy sandy beach. The greatest view of the beach comes from these hills, which were rated the second most gorgeous beach in the world by users of the British Observer.

There are public restrooms, and lifeguards are on duty throughout the summer. Ballymastocker Bay is a fantastic area for children and teenagers to surf. Because of the strong waves near the rocks, it is best to avoid swimming in the rocky area of the beach.

9. Culdaff Beach

Final Thoughts on Beaches in Donegal

Exploring Donegal’s beaches has been an immersive experience, filled with the sound of breaking waves, the feel of soft sand beneath my feet, and stunning panoramas that seem to stretch on forever.

I’ve walked along the craggy cliffs, put my toes in the crystal-clear seas, and marveled at the region’s numerous natural treasures.

Each locale, from the serenity of Murder Hole Beach to the grand stretches of Culdaff Beach, has its distinct appeal and fascination.
